Rainy Season is Busy Season

planting crops in Kigali, rwanda

Nonsense. This is Rwanda — every season is busy season. But still, with the return of the rains, there’s a renewed push to prepare the fields for a second harvest. it seems ridiculous that there’s still subsistence farming going on right here in Kigali, but the pace of development is such that new neighborhoods are enveloping patches of land still in active use. I have yet to see anything mechanized — there are no tractors, no draft animals, it’s all simply hard labor done by hand, row after row, field after field.

With the older kids back in school, the work is now done predominantly by the women, always with the littlest of the kids either swaddled to their backs or milling around in the fields doing their own thing.
