'Tis the Season to be Nasty

salvationarmyKeep it Classy, Salvation Army. No better way to live out the gospel of Christmas than by doing the dirty work for the INS:

The Salvation Army and a charity affiliated with the Houston Fire Department are among those that consider immigration status, asking for birth certificates or Social Security cards for the children

To quote one commenter over at TP: I thought Jesus loved everyone, not just people with Green Cards.

So, is this the new Lou Dobbs school of compassion: “let the little children come to me” — provided they have their paperwork in order? For shame. We already knew the Salvation Army sucks, but this is really an incredibly low blow. The whole scene seems vaguely misguided:

Those who do check immigration status or other qualifications say they are trying to ensure they make the best decisions about whom to help.

“We want to be good stewards, so the people that are donating to us trust we’re going to do the right thing,” said Sonya Scott, manager of care ministries at West Houston Assistance Ministries. The group does not check immigration but requires identification, including birth certificates for children, and proof of income.

Wait, so in order to be deemed eligible to receive a charitable donation you need to show proof of income? I’d have thunk the children of those who can prove no income would be even more worthy of help. And why is a birth certifiicate needed — if you don’t have one, you don’t exist, and thus you can’t be worthy of a present? How warped is that logic? And yet these totally corrupt dipshits can apparently use their “faith-based” credentials to get federal aid to keep their programs “for the needy” running.
